By joining The Green Community, you recognise your responsibility as a global citizen and continually strive to do what you can to protect the environment.
As such, we are promoting The Green Community's 8 Green Practices to heal our planet. We hope that with your participation and adoption of the 8 Green Practices, we will make a difference for Earth.
8 Green Practices
1. Think before you print.
Reduce the use of paper. Preview before you print, and print on both sides. If possible, don't print at all - many documents can be viewed and kept in your computer, and sent using the internet. Offer major documents on CD or as PDF files to intended recipients. Store letterheads electronically rather than have stock printed.
2. Switch them off - completely.
When not in use, switch off lights, air-conditioning, computers and other electrical and electronic devices. Switch them off completely (means not putting them on standby) and pull out the plugs from the power points. Practically every electronic device that you plug into a socket continues to consume electricity after you've switched the device off. Examples include phone charges, notebook power adaptors, microwave ovens, game consoles cd, video and dvd players.
3. Tele-commute.
We have e-mail, instant messaging (like Skype), video conferencing and VoIP to help us communicate in our daily lives. By cutting down on commuting using your vehicle, you are reducing carbon emissions. You also save money and time.
4. Say NO to plastic bags.
You can put your purchases in that plastic bag you are holding, instead of taking another one. Better yet, bring your own bag.
5. Bring your own.
Start by bringing your own bottle of water instead of buying bottled water. Even Starbucks is encouraging it's patrons to use their own tumblers by giving discounts. Avoid using disposable chopsticks by bringing your own portable pair. When buying food, bring along your own food container.
6. Sort and recycle.
When throwing out paper, plastics, electronic devices, and other items, sort them out properly. Paper and plastic can be sold for money and electronic devices should be disposed off properly. Contact the Department of Environment for further assistance.
7. Support eco-friendly products.
Check labels on packaging and familiarise yourself with terms that you would normally find on packaging. You will be surprised at the range of effective and eco-friendly products that we have now - furniture, clothes, cleaning products and so much more.
8. Reduce consumption.
There are many areas in your life where you can cut down on your consumption. Just because you are using low voltage gadgets, and far more efficient engines, it doesn't mean that you should use more power. Check your habits and you will be surprised to find out you don't really need to use that much dish washing liquid to wash your dishes.
