An IP (Internet Protocol) address is the numeric designation that identifies each computer connected to the Internet. Within a local network as well as on the Internet, every machine has a unique IP address. An IP address is defined by four sets of numbers separated by periods. Each number set has up to three digits in it (i.e. 123.45.67.89) and can range from 0 to 255. IP addresses have a corresponding domain name, a unique text Internet address, which is translated using DNS. IP addresses can also be used by Internet fax machines, routers, telephones and other machines that operate over a network. |
